Why haven't I received my GI Bill housing or tuition payments yet, and what should I do?

Delays in Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) payments are a common issue, especially for the first term after separation or when starting at a new school. Tuition and fees are paid directly to the school, while the Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) and book stipend are paid to the student, typically after the school certifies enrollment to the VA through VA-ONCE. If a school has not yet certified your enrollment, the VA has no record to process payment against, so the first step is always to confirm with the school's certifying official (usually in the registrar or veterans services office) that your enrollment was submitted.

If certification has been sent and enough time has passed, you can check the status of your claim through the VA's eBenefits or VA.gov GI Bill dashboard, which sometimes shows pending or processing status. If it shows no activity, contact the Education Call Center at 1-888-442-4551, since they can see internal processing notes that are not visible on the online portal. Have your Certificate of Eligibility and school information ready when you call.

If the delay is causing financial hardship, ask the school's veterans certifying official about a tuition deferment plan, since Chapter 33 delays are common enough that most colleges have a formal deferment process to avoid late fees or being dropped from classes while the VA payment catches up. Some schools also have emergency funds or short-term loan programs specifically for veterans in this situation.

Separately, but relevant to the overall financial strain described, veterans who are unemployed while pursuing a rating increase or dealing with service-connected conditions should look into VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E, Chapter 31), which is available even before a final disability rating is issued in some cases, and can provide job placement help, training, and in some circumstances a subsistence allowance. This is separate from GI Bill education benefits and has its own eligibility process through VA Form 28-1900.

The concrete next step is to call the VA Education Call Center directly to get a real-time status update on the GI Bill claim and, in parallel, contact the school's certifying official to request a tuition/fee deferment while the payment issue is resolved.
