Why doesn't my VA award letter show my SMC, and how do I check if my payment amount is correct?

Veterans rated 100% permanent and total who receive Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) sometimes find that their award letter or eBenefits/VA.gov payment history does not clearly spell out which SMC level they are receiving. This is a known quirk of how VA formats award letters: the letter typically states the combined monthly payment amount but does not always print the SMC statutory reference (such as SMC-S, SMC-L, SMC-K, etc.) in plain language. To find out exactly which SMC level you are rated under, request a copy of your rating decision (not just the award letter) through VA.gov or by submitting a request to the Records Management Center, or ask your regional office directly. The rating decision will cite the specific SMC provision under 38 U.S.C. § 1114 and 38 CFR § 3.350 that applies to your case.

Comparing your payment to the published compensation tables is the right instinct, but remember that SMC rates are not part of the standard 0-100% disability table — they are listed separately, often on a different VA.gov page or in the compensation rate tables under a section specifically labeled SMC. If your monthly payment doesn't match any number you can find, double-check whether you are looking at combined SMC and basic compensation rates, additional dependents, or additional allowances for things like Aid and Attendance, loss of use, or additional SMC-K awards stacked on top of a base SMC level.

Small discrepancies, such as a consistent $50-$70 monthly difference, are frequently caused by deductions unrelated to the disability compensation rate itself — for example, Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI) or Service-Disabled Veterans Insurance (S-DVI) premiums, which VA is authorized to deduct directly from compensation payments. These deductions won't appear on the award letter as a disability rate change; they show up only as a net payment difference.

Contacting the VA directly through the 1-800-827-1000 number or working through an accredited VSO will not trigger an audit of your benefits. Requesting clarification on your own payment is a routine, protected action, not a red flag. A VSO can often access your eBenefits/VA.gov claims file and rating decision faster and explain the SMC code in plain terms.

As a next step, request and review your full rating decision (not just the award letter) to see the exact SMC code cited, and separately check your VA insurance account for any automatic premium deductions that could explain a small recurring payment difference.
