VA disability payment didn't show up in my bank account - what should I do?

It is not unusual for a VA compensation or pension payment to be delayed, show up late, or temporarily disappear from the payment history in the VA.gov or VA mobile app. This can happen for several reasons: a banking information update or change at the VA or at your financial institution, a hold placed by the Department of Treasury (which actually disburses VA benefit payments, not the VA directly), a flag on the account due to a recent award change, overpayment offset, or dependency adjustment, or simply a processing delay between the VA's system and Treasury's direct deposit system. The VA's app and eBenefits/VA.gov payment history are informational displays pulled from Treasury and VA systems, and they can lag, glitch, or temporarily not reflect a payment that is still in process.

Because VA disability compensation payments are issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Bureau of the Fiscal Service, not by the VA cutting a check itself, a veteran who does not receive an expected deposit should treat it as a joint VA/Treasury issue. The VA can confirm whether a payment was certified and sent, but Treasury (or the veteran's bank) controls whether and when it actually lands in the account. If the VA states a payment was sent and the bank says it was never received, this is usually due to either a banking information mismatch, a bank-side rejection that gets sent back to Treasury, or a timing issue where the payment is still in transit (direct deposits can take a business day or two past the scheduled date, especially around weekends).

If a payment is missing, the standard steps are: first verify the direct deposit information on file with the VA (via VA.gov, by phone, or through the regional benefits office) matches the actual account and routing numbers exactly; second, ask the VA for a trace or confirmation number for the specific payment and the exact date and amount it was sent to Treasury; third, if the bank confirms no incoming ACH deposit was received or returned, request that the VA initiate a payment trace with Treasury, which can identify whether the funds were returned, rejected, or still pending. This process can take some time to resolve, and outcomes vary depending on whether the issue is a simple timing delay or an actual misdirected or returned payment.

The concrete next step is to call the VA as planned, explicitly ask for the payment trace/confirmation details for that specific deposit, and separately verify with your bank whether any ACH transaction (even a rejected one) was logged on their end around that date.
