My VA rating decision shows no dependents listed — do I need to call or file something to add them?

When a rating decision comes back without dependents listed, it almost always means the VA did not receive, or could not process, dependency information before the decision was finalized. This is especially common with Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) claims, since these are processed on an accelerated timeline while a service member is still separating, and dependency paperwork sometimes has not caught up by the time the rating is issued.

Adding dependents is handled separately from the disability rating itself. If your combined rating is 30 percent or higher, you are eligible for additional compensation for a spouse, children, or dependent parents, but the VA will only add that additional amount once it has the proper dependency evidence on file. This is done using VA Form 21-686c, Declaration of Status of Dependents, for a spouse or children, or VA Form 21-509 for a dependent parent. These forms can be submitted online through the VA.gov eDependents tool, by mail, or in person at a regional office.

If you already submitted dependency information as part of your original BDD claim and it simply was not reflected in the rating decision, you do not necessarily need to file a new claim. In that case, contacting the VA by phone (1-800-827-1000) or submitting an inquiry through Ask VA is a reasonable step to find out whether the dependency evidence is still in the system and just needs to be processed, or whether it never made it into your file. If it was never submitted, filing Form 21-686c (and providing supporting documents such as a marriage certificate or children's birth certificates) is the correct path forward.

Once dependency status is verified and processed, any additional compensation for dependents is generally paid retroactive to the effective date of the rating decision, as long as the dependency existed at that time and the required evidence is eventually provided. There is no fixed waiting period required before calling; if a few days pass with no confirmation that the dependency paperwork was received, it is reasonable to follow up.

The concrete next step is to check your VA.gov account for any pending dependency claim status, and if nothing shows up, submit VA Form 21-686c with supporting documentation (or call the VA to confirm whether it was already received) rather than assuming it will be added automatically.
