My VA disability claim is still pending and I don't know what's going on — what can I do to check status or get it unstuck?

Aggregate VA processing statistics describe averages across the entire system, not your individual case. A claim can sit in the inventory for longer than the published average processing time for several common reasons: a required exam has not been scheduled or completed, a request for evidence from you or a third party (like a private doctor or employer) is still open, the file was routed to a different regional office or a specialty team, or the claim is flagged for a Duty to Assist review because something in the record appears incomplete.

The first concrete step is to log into VA.gov and check your claim status page. It will show whether you are in the "Gathering Evidence," "Review," "Preparation for Decision," or another phase, and it will list any open evidence requests addressed to you. If there is an open request, respond to it as quickly as possible, since claims commonly stall waiting on veteran-submitted evidence like a buddy statement, medical records release, or a completed Disability Benefits Questionnaire.

If VA.gov shows no pending action on your end and the claim still appears stalled, contact the VA National Call Center (1-800-827-1000) and ask for a status update and whether any internal action item is outstanding. You can also reach out to your Veteran Service Officer (VSO) if you have one on file — VSOs can often see more detail in the claims system and can push on administrative holds that are not visible to the veteran.

If a required Compensation and Pension exam has not been scheduled after a reasonable amount of time, ask your VSO or the call center to confirm the exam request was actually sent to the contracted examiner; sometimes requests are lost or need to be resent. If the claim remains unresolved for an extended period with no clear explanation, you can also request a Decision Review Officer review or escalate through your congressional representative's veterans affairs caseworker, which sometimes prompts an internal status check VA call center staff cannot perform themselves.

Finally, keep records of every call, the date, the representative's name, and what you were told, since this documentation is useful if you later need to show the claim exceeded reasonable processing time. As a concrete next step, log into VA.gov today, check for any open evidence requests on your specific claim, and respond to those first before escalating further.
