My VA claim status shows 'closed' and a decision has been made but I haven't gotten the letter yet and my rating hasn't changed — should I be worried?

Seeing a claim move to phase 8 (Preparation for Notification) and then show as closed with no visible letter or rating change yet is a normal, common sequence and is not by itself a bad sign. The eight phases in the VA claim status tool (Claim Received, Initial Review, Evidence Gathering, Review of Evidence, Preparation for Decision, Pending Decision Approval, Preparation for Notification, and Complete) describe internal processing steps, not the outcome of the decision. Once a claim reaches phase 8, a rating decision has already been made internally; what remains is generating the official decision letter, quality-review sign-off, and mailing/uploading it to your eBenefits or VA.gov account. It is common for the status to flip to 'closed' a few days before the actual decision letter and updated rating appear, because those downstream systems (letters, compensation and pension records, direct deposit adjustments) update on a slightly different schedule than the claims-tracking status. A change in your disability rating percentage will not show until the rating decision is processed into the corporate database, which can lag behind the status tool by several days to a couple of weeks. The content of the decision itself — approval, denial, or a rating percentage — cannot be determined from the phase status alone; only the letter and updated rating will tell you the actual outcome. If the exam was thorough and covered all claimed conditions, that is a good sign that the file was complete enough to rate, but it says nothing about whether the outcome was favorable. There is no need to contact the VA yet solely because the status closed without a visible letter; this gap is typical. If several weeks pass with the status still closed and no letter has appeared in your VA.gov 'Notifications' or documents section, or no rating change if applicable, then it is reasonable to call the VA at 1-800-827-1000 to confirm the letter was mailed and check your correct mailing/electronic address on file. In the meantime, keep checking your VA.gov account and mail periodically rather than assuming the lack of an immediate letter or rating change signals a problem.
