Is there a way to check if my VA claim was approved before I get the official decision letter?

Many veterans want to know their outcome before the official decision letter arrives, and it's understandable to look for shortcuts. However, the only way to get a confirmed, binding determination of service connection and rating is the official decision — either the rating decision letter mailed to you or the decision notice available in your VA.gov claim status page once the claim moves to "Complete." Anything you see before that point, including data that appears in backend systems while a claim is still in earlier steps, should be treated as unverified and potentially subject to change. VA decisions are not final until they are issued in writing, and only the signed rating decision (or the notice in eBenefits/VA.gov once posted) carries legal weight for purposes of effective dates, appeal rights, and payment start dates under 38 CFR 3.400 and related regulations.

Using undocumented API endpoints or back-end data feeds not intended for direct public viewing is not an officially sanctioned way to track your claim, and outcomes shown that way have not gone through final quality review, so they could still change before the claim is finalized. Relying on this kind of information can also lead to confusion if the diagnostic code or percentage you see gets revised in the final review step, which does happen.

The reliable ways to monitor a pending claim are the VA.gov "track claims" tool, which shows the current phase (Claim Received, Initial Review, Evidence Gathering, Review of Evidence, Preparation for Decision, Pending Decision Approval, Preparation for Notification, Complete), and direct contact with the VA through 1-800-827-1000, or through an accredited Veterans Service Organization (VSO) representative, who can sometimes get a status update on your behalf. Once the claim reaches "Complete," the decision letter and any award letter for compensation will be generated, and that is the moment the rating becomes official and appealable if you disagree with it, using VA Form 20-0995 (Supplemental Claim), VA Form 20-0996 (Higher-Level Review), or VA Form 10182 (Notice of Disagreement for the Appeals Modernization Act board process).

The concrete next step is to keep checking the official VA.gov claim status tracker and wait for the formal decision letter rather than treating any preliminary data as final, and to reach out to a VSO if you want a status check while the claim is still moving through the process.
