Is it bad to have multiple mental health C&P exams scheduled on the same day, and what should I say during the exam?

Having several C&P exams scheduled on the same day, including multiple mental health evaluations, is not inherently harmful to a claim. The VA and its contracted examiners (through companies like LHI, QTC, or VES) often batch exams together for scheduling efficiency, especially when a veteran has multiple mental health conditions claimed or when conditions like PTSD, depression, and anxiety are being evaluated together because they share overlapping symptoms. Examiners are trained to evaluate each claimed condition on its own merits using the relevant Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ), so having them back-to-back does not automatically reduce the quality or accuracy of either evaluation. That said, mental health exams can be emotionally taxing, so pacing yourself and being mentally prepared for a longer, more demanding day is reasonable.

Regarding what to say, the single most important guidance is to answer honestly and specifically rather than defaulting to reflexive minimization like "I'm fine" or "It's not a big deal." Examiners are assessing occupational and social impairment under the General Rating Formula for Mental Disorders (38 CFR § 4.130), and vague or minimizing answers can result in an evaluation that does not accurately reflect your actual level of impairment. It helps to think through specific, concrete examples beforehand: How do your symptoms affect your ability to keep a job, maintain relationships, sleep, concentrate, or leave the house? Rather than saying "things are okay," describe a recent instance where symptoms interfered with daily functioning, such as missing work, avoiding social situations, or conflict with family. Bring specifics about frequency, duration, and severity, since raters rely heavily on the examiner's description of functional impairment, not just a diagnosis.

It is also acceptable to mention if you are having a harder day than usual due to the exam itself, or if nervousness is affecting how you're presenting, since examiners understand that the C&P setting is stressful. Avoid exaggerating, but do not underreport symptoms out of pride, habit, or a desire to appear strong. If you keep any personal mental health records, treatment notes, or a symptom journal, reviewing them beforehand can help you recall specific incidents rather than relying on memory alone under stress.

The concrete next step is to prepare a brief written list beforehand of specific recent examples showing how each condition affects work, relationships, and daily activities, and bring that list as a personal reference to stay accurate and complete during the exam.
