I'm rated 100% P&T — do I qualify for VA dental and vision care, and can I use community care to keep my current dentist?

Veterans rated 100% permanent and total (P&T) qualify for Class I VA dental care, which is comprehensive and not limited like the dental benefits available to most other veterans. Class I eligibility means the VA treats dental the same as any other medical condition under your disability rating — you don't need a separate dental rating or a specific service-connected dental condition to receive care. This is different from Class II or IIa eligibility, which is limited to specific service-connected dental issues or certain combat-era situations.

Whether you can use your current outside dentist through community care depends on access standards set by the MISSION Act (distance and wait-time thresholds) and whether your local VA dental clinic can accommodate you within those standards. If the VA facility can provide timely care in-house, community care referral may not be approved; if it cannot meet drive-time or appointment-availability standards, a community care referral becomes more likely. The decision is made by VA staff after you're enrolled and request dental care, not something you can self-authorize. You can ask your VA health care team directly whether your preferred dentist is already part of the community care network or could be added.

For vision, 100% P&T status does not automatically grant comprehensive routine eye care or glasses the way dental Class I does. Routine vision care and glasses are generally tied to specific eligibility criteria — such as a service-connected eye condition, specific disabilities (like loss of visual acuity), or certain special eligibility categories (former POW, Purple Heart recipients, etc.) — rather than overall P&T status alone. Many veterans without a qualifying condition can still receive eye exams tied to management of related issues (like diabetes), but routine refraction exams and glasses purely for vision correction are more limited. Coverage varies by individual case, so it's worth asking your VA primary care or optometry department directly what you specifically qualify for.

Because dental and vision eligibility hinge on documentation already in your VA file, the concrete next step is to enroll in VA health care (if not already enrolled), then schedule an appointment or call the VA health benefits office to confirm in writing your specific dental and vision eligibility category before deciding whether to drop your private coverage.
