I'm 100% P&T and still enrolled in school — can I opt out of the automatic TPD student loan discharge?

Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) discharge is a Department of Education program, administered through its servicer (Nelnet), that cancels federal student loans for borrowers who are permanently and totally disabled. The Department periodically runs a data match with the VA, and veterans with a 100% Permanent and Total (P&T) disability rating are identified as automatically eligible. When a match occurs, the Department sends a notice explaining that the discharge will happen automatically unless the borrower opts out, typically within a defined window described in the notice and on StudentAid.gov. Some veterans, especially those still enrolled and wanting to keep borrowing through graduation, want to opt out because once a TPD discharge is processed, taking out new federal student loans afterward generally requires a physician's certification that the borrower is able to engage in substantial gainful activity, and any new disbursement during a post-discharge monitoring period can also trigger reinstatement of the discharged debt.

If the automatic discharge is processed before you've had a chance to opt out, you are not without options. You can contact the TPD servicer directly, request a reversal or "recall" of the discharge, and ask that the call be documented in your file, including the date, time, and representative's name. It is also important to keep your own written record of every call, email, and document exchanged. Filing a complaint through the StudentAid.gov Feedback Center under the loan discharge/TPD category creates an official record and often prompts a faster review, especially when supported by evidence such as call logs, screenshots, and any prior communications showing you attempted to opt out before the discharge was finalized. Looping in your school's financial aid office also helps ensure your enrollment and loan status stay consistent on their end.

Because the VA-Department of Education data match runs on a periodic basis, some veterans have reported needing to renew their opt-out request after each match rather than assuming one opt-out is permanent, though official guidance on this point should be confirmed directly with the servicer or StudentAid.gov, since practices can change.

If you are 100% P&T and still borrowing federal student loans, the concrete next step is to proactively contact the TPD servicer now, in writing if possible, to request that your opt-out preference be documented on your account before the next quarterly data match occurs.
