How long does it take VA to decide a PTSD/depression claim after separation, and what can I do while waiting?

Claims filed before or shortly after separation go through VA's standard disability claims process, and processing time varies a great deal depending on how complete the claim is, whether records (including service treatment records and any private or VA medical evidence) are already in the file, and whether a Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam is needed. There is no fixed number of days VA promises, and averages you may see online can shift month to month, so it is safer to track your own claim status through VA.gov or by calling the VA benefits hotline rather than relying on other veterans' timelines.

A few things can speed things along. If you have not already done so, submitting a fully developed claim with all supporting evidence (buddy statements, treatment records, a nexus letter if available) tends to move faster than an incomplete file, because VA does not have to request outstanding records. Attending any scheduled C&P exam is essential; missing it can pause or even close the claim. You can check status and upload additional evidence through VA.gov, and you can also request a Higher-Level Review, Supplemental Claim (VA Form 20-0995), or Board Appeal (VA Form 10182) once a decision is issued if the rating or effective date is wrong.

Financially, while a claim is pending, VA disability compensation is not guaranteed and should not be budgeted as certain income until a decision is made, since ratings and effective dates can vary. If a claim is eventually granted, back pay is generally calculated to the effective date (often the day after separation or the claim's filing date), so any retroactive payment would be separate from your current paycheck-to-paycheck budget. In the meantime, some veterans use interim benefits like unemployment compensation for ex-servicemembers (UCX) if eligible, or look into VA's healthcare enrollment for related conditions, which does not require the disability claim to be finished first.

The concrete next step is to log into VA.gov, confirm your claim status and that no additional evidence or exam is outstanding, and if anything is pending on your end, submit it promptly since incomplete files are a common cause of delay.
