How long does it normally take to get your C-File from the VA?

There is no fixed statutory deadline for the VA to produce a claims file (C-File) once you request it, and processing times vary widely depending on the size of the file, the regional office or records center handling the request, and current backlog. Many veterans do experience waits stretching several months, and it is not unusual for requests to take longer than veterans expect, especially for older or more complex files that require review before release.

A C-File request is typically submitted through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request or via the eBenefits/VA.gov personal records request tool, sometimes also requested through VA Form 20-10206 or directly through the National Personnel Records Center or the VA regional office holding the file. Because the request is processed outside the normal disability compensation claims pipeline, it does not show up in the same status trackers used for rating decisions, which is why many veterans feel like their request has stalled with no visibility into where it stands.

If you are well past what seems like a reasonable timeframe, there are a few concrete things you can do. First, call the VA National Call Center (1-800-827-1000) and ask them to check the status of your FOIA/records request specifically, since this is different from a disability claim status. Second, if you submitted your request through eBenefits or VA.gov, log back in and check whether the request shows any updates or requires additional verification. Third, consider submitting a follow-up FOIA inquiry directly to the VA FOIA office, referencing your original request date and any confirmation or tracking number you received. You can also request an update through your Congressional representative's office, as many offices have staff who specifically help constituents get unresponsive VA record requests moving.

It's also worth noting that a delayed C-File does not have to hold up an active disability claim or appeal. If you have a claim or appeal already pending and are only trying to review your file for accuracy or to prepare additional evidence, you may be able to proceed with submitting evidence and arguments without waiting for the full C-File in hand, since VA is still obligated to consider new evidence you submit independently.

As a next step, call the VA National Call Center and ask them to escalate a status check specifically on your FOIA/records request, and if there is no resolution within a reasonable follow-up period, contact your U.S. Representative or Senator's office for casework assistance.
