Many veterans want a secure, portable way to prove service history and disability rating without carrying paper originals everywhere. The good news is that both documents are available digitally through official government systems, and you can access them from a phone or tablet instead of risking loss or damage to paper copies.
Your DD214 can be requested and, in many cases, viewed or downloaded through the National Archives' eVetRecs system or through the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) if you do not already have a digital copy on file. If you are enrolled in VA health care or have interacted with VA before, your DD214 may already be uploaded to your VA.gov profile under the "Military Information" or "Documents" section. Checking VA.gov first is usually the fastest route, since many service members' separation documents are already stored there.

Analyze my claim free →Your VA disability rating letter is available directly through VA.gov. Log into your account, go to the disability section, and look for "View your VA benefit letters" or similar wording. From there you can download a PDF of your current disability rating letter, which also serves as official proof of your rating percentage and effective dates. This letter can be saved to your phone, printed, or stored in a secure cloud service.
For added security while traveling, many veterans use an encrypted note app, a password-protected cloud folder (such as one through Google Drive, iCloud, or a dedicated secure vault app), or a physical fireproof document folder kept at home with a scanned digital backup on a personal device. Avoid storing unencrypted copies in general photo galleries or unsecured email drafts, since these documents contain personal identifying information.
It is also worth setting up multi-factor authentication on your VA.gov account, since that account is the single most reliable source for re-downloading these documents anytime, from anywhere, without needing to carry originals at all.
As a next step, log into VA.gov, confirm that your DD214 and current disability rating letter are both available for download, and save secure digital copies you can pull up from your phone during travel.
