Routine eye exams are part of the standard VA medical benefits package for veterans enrolled in VA health care. If you are enrolled, you can schedule an eye exam through your VA facility like any other appointment, and many veterans go years without realizing this.
Free eyeglasses are a separate benefit with its own eligibility rules, set out in 38 CFR 17.149. The VA provides eyeglasses at no cost to several groups, including veterans with a compensable service-connected disability, former prisoners of war, Purple Heart recipients, veterans rated permanently housebound or receiving aid and attendance benefits, and veterans whose vision problems are connected to a service-connected condition or to treatment the VA provided for another condition. If you fall into one of those groups, the glasses themselves, including standard progressive lenses in many cases, come at no charge, with optional add-ons like coatings sometimes carrying a modest fee.
