Can I still receive my VA disability compensation if I move abroad?

Yes, in general VA disability compensation, including 100% schedular or TDIU/PnT benefits, is not tied to residing within the United States. VA payments can be sent to veterans living in most foreign countries, either by direct deposit to a U.S. bank account or, in some cases, through international direct deposit arrangements. Your monthly compensation amount is fixed by your combined rating and dependent status under 38 CFR Part 4, not by your cost of living or location, so it does not increase or decrease just because you move to a cheaper or more expensive country.

A Permanent and Total (P&T) rating means VA has determined your service-connected disabilities are both stable (unlikely to improve) and total, and this status generally is not affected by a change of address, foreign or domestic. However, there are practical issues to plan for. VA occasionally sends eligibility verification or wellness correspondence, and failing to respond to any request for information can create administrative delays, so maintaining a reliable mailing address, a U.S.-based forwarding address, or a power of attorney/representative who can receive mail is wise. If you rely on VA health care through the VA or community care network, most direct VA medical benefits do not transfer overseas; the Foreign Medical Program (FMP) only covers treatment for service-connected conditions and only in certain countries, so any non-service-connected care would be entirely out of pocket or through local insurance.

Also consider that state benefits, such as VA-linked property tax exemptions, education benefits transferred to dependents, or state-specific veteran programs, are tied to U.S. residency and will be lost if you relocate abroad. If you receive Social Security Disability or SSI in addition to VA compensation, eligibility rules differ significantly and moving abroad can affect those separately from VA disability pay.

Before finalizing any move, contact VA directly or your accredited representative to confirm how they want you to update your address and banking information, and check whether the specific country you are considering has any banking or tax treaty issues that could complicate direct deposit. The concrete next step is to update your address and direct deposit information with VA through eBenefits/VA.gov, or by calling the VA benefits hotline, before or immediately after you relocate, to avoid any interruption in payments.
