Can I add more conditions to my claim before my C&P exam happens?

Yes, you can add additional conditions to an open disability claim before your Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam takes place, and many veterans do exactly this once they better understand the process. The key is understanding how the VA's system works: each condition you want rated must be specifically claimed, either individually or as secondary to something already service-connected. The VA does not automatically add conditions just because they come up in conversation with a VSO or during an exam.

If your original claim is still open and has not yet received a decision, you can typically add new conditions to that same claim by submitting VA Form 21-526EZ again, checking the box indicating it is a new claim for additional conditions, or by working through your VSO or accredited representative to submit a statement in support of the claim (VA Form 21-4138) listing the new conditions. If the original claim gets decided before you submit the additions, you would instead need to file a supplemental claim (VA Form 20-0995) with new and relevant evidence, or simply submit a fresh initial claim for the newly identified conditions.

Timing matters here. If you can get the additional conditions into the claims file before the C&P exam is scheduled or completed, the examiner may be able to address them during that same exam, which can save you from needing a second exam later. If the exam has already happened by the time you add a condition, the VA will typically need to schedule a separate C&P exam for that newly claimed issue, which adds time to the process.

For each new condition, you will still need to meet the same three basic requirements for service connection: a current diagnosis, an in-service event, injury, or illness, and a medical nexus linking the two. For conditions that developed after service but may be connected to something already rated (like joint pain from favoring an injured limb, or sleep apnea linked to a rated respiratory or mental health condition), these are claimed as secondary conditions and require their own nexus evidence.

Contact your VSO or representative as soon as possible, before the exam date, and ask them to formally add each specific condition you believe is related to your service, along with any supporting medical records you have.
