Active duty but Outside BDD Window

Since you are outside the BDD window but still on active duty, your optimal strategy is to meticulously prepare a Fully Developed Claim (FDC) to expedite processing after separation. Your effective date will be the day after separation if your claim is received within one year (38 CFR 3.155, 38 CFR 3.400). Organize your evidence by creating a separate, labeled section for each condition you intend to claim. For each, include: (1) a current diagnosis (even if from a private provider); (2) all relevant service treatment records (STRs) demonstrating in-service event, injury, or onset; and (3) a clear nexus statement linking the two, which can be a buddy letter, personal statement (VA Form 21-4138), or a medical opinion. Crucially, align your evidence with the VA's rating criteria; for mental health conditions like anxiety or depression, reference the DBQ and the General Rating Formula for Mental Disorders under 38 CFR 4.130 (Diagnostic Code 9400, etc.), which bases evaluation on occupational and social impairment. For musculoskeletal claims, understand that under *DeLuca v. Brown*, you can describe functional loss (pain, weakness) during your C&P exam to properly convey severity. Your actionable next steps are: complete your final medical appointments, obtain and review your complete STRs (not just post-deployment health assessments), write detailed personal statements for each condition, and then submit everything simultaneously via VA Form 21-526EZ. This comprehensive submission as an FDC prevents the VA from having to develop the claim and can significantly reduce decision time, though you must ensure it is complete at filing.
