Why is my VA claim still stuck on the same step after I already submitted the requested information?

The VA claim status tracker on VA.gov (and the phone system) shows a simplified, high-level view of where your claim sits in the eight-step process. It does not update in real time, and it often does not reflect specific sub-tasks that have already been completed. Uploading a document, having a call center representative enter direct deposit information, or submitting other requested evidence does not automatically move the tracker to the next step. The step only advances once a claims processor at the regional office actually reviews the file, confirms the required information is present and correct, and manually updates the system.

This lag is normal and does not necessarily mean anything is wrong with the claim. Direct deposit information entered by a call center representative is stored in a different system (used for payment processing) than the claims-processing system that drives the step tracker. Even though you can see the updated banking information in your account, the reviewer assigned to the disability claim still has to confirm receipt and mark that requirement as satisfied in the claims file before the tracker moves forward. Backlogs, staffing at the specific regional office, and the overall volume of claims being processed all affect how quickly that internal update happens.

It is also worth confirming that the direct deposit information was actually associated with the specific claim in question, since direct deposit setup for benefits payments and the evidence requirement tied to a particular claim can sometimes be treated as separate items depending on how the request was generated. If the deadline given (in this case August 30) has passed and the tracker still shows the same step, it is reasonable to follow up rather than assume the system will self-correct.

If you have already confirmed the direct deposit information is correct and linked to your claim, and the step has not changed after the requested deadline, contact the VA benefits hotline again and ask the representative to check the claims-processing notes (not just the banking system) to confirm the evidence was logged and matched to your claim, and request a status update or escalation if it was not.
