If I submit more evidence after the BDD 90-day window, will my claim still be processed as BDD or switch to a standard claim?

The Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) program requires that the claim be filed between 180 and 90 days before separation, and that all necessary development, including C&P exams, be completed in time for a rating decision to be ready at or near discharge. The 90-day cutoff mainly governs when the claim must be initially submitted to qualify for BDD processing, not when all evidence must be finalized. Submitting supplemental evidence after that point, such as buddy statements, personal statements, or updated medical records, does not automatically convert the claim to a standard claim. What actually determines whether a claim stays in the BDD track is whether the additional evidence can still be reviewed and the required exams completed before the separation date. If the new evidence triggers a need for additional exams that cannot be scheduled and completed before discharge, VA may have to finish development after separation, which effectively functions like a standard claim even if it was originally filed as BDD.

In practice, it is common and generally fine to submit additional lay evidence, buddy statements, or updated records after the initial BDD submission, especially when records were delayed due to issues pulling them from military treatment facilities or MHS Genesis. Buddy statements and personal statements can be submitted at any point before a decision is made, and VA is required to consider all evidence of record at the time of the rating decision, regardless of when it was submitted, as long as it arrives before the case is certified for rating.

Regarding overall timelines, BDD claims are generally processed faster than standard claims because most of the development work, including exams, happens before separation, allowing VA to issue a decision close to the discharge date. Standard claims filed after separation typically take longer because development, including scheduling exams, begins from scratch after the claim is filed. However, exact processing times vary significantly based on the number of claimed conditions, exam availability, and regional office workload, so no fixed timeframe can be reliably quoted.

The concrete next step is to contact the assigned VSO or submit the new evidence directly through VA.gov or the eBenefits portal as soon as possible, clearly labeling it as additional evidence for the pending BDD claim, so it can be associated with the existing claim before the remaining C&P exams and final review are completed.
