How long after separating from the Guard/Reserves can my family enroll in CHAMPVA if I'm already 100% P&T?

CHAMPVA eligibility for dependents requires two things: the veteran must have a 100 percent, permanent and total (P&T) service-connected disability rating, and the dependents must not otherwise be eligible for TRICARE. While you remain in the Guard or Reserves, your family is typically covered under TRICARE (often TRICARE Reserve Select or similar), and that TRICARE eligibility is what blocks CHAMPVA enrollment, not your VA rating itself. Your 100% P&T rating already satisfies the disability requirement; it is the TRICARE status that has to change.

Once you separate, TRICARE eligibility for you and your dependents generally ends, at which point they become eligible for CHAMPVA as long as your P&T rating is in effect. The key practical issue is timing: DEERS has to reflect that TRICARE eligibility has ended before CHAMPVA will approve the application, and DEERS updates are driven by your separation paperwork (DD-214) being processed. There can be a real gap between the day TRICARE actually stops and the day DEERS/CHAMPVA systems catch up, since VHIC/CHAMPVA processing depends on accurate DEERS data. Many people apply for CHAMPVA using VA Form 10-10d as soon as separation is final rather than waiting, since CHAMPVA can potentially cover the period retroactive to when TRICARE eligibility ended, but the family needs to keep records of medical expenses and TRICARE termination dates in case of a coverage gap while paperwork is processed.

Separating from the Guard or Reserves does not, by itself, affect an existing 100% P&T disability rating. P&T ratings are tied to the service-connected disability determination, not to current military status, so leaving the Reserves does not trigger a reevaluation or reduction. The rating and monthly compensation continue uninterrupted; what changes is only the family's health coverage source, from TRICARE to CHAMPVA.

Because DEERS updates and CHAMPVA processing timelines vary based on how quickly separation orders and the DD-214 are processed and transmitted, it is worth confirming with the Reserve unit's admin office that separation paperwork will be submitted promptly, and applying for CHAMPVA immediately upon separation rather than waiting for a formal denial from TRICARE first.

The concrete next step is to submit VA Form 10-10d to CHAMPVA as soon as the separation is finalized and DD-214 is in hand, and simultaneously confirm your and your dependents' TRICARE termination date so you can document the transition if a coverage gap occurs.
